Johannesburg - Police and the ANC could not immediately confirm a report on Monday that party MP Jackson Mthembu was shot and wounded in Mpumalanga at the weekend.

“We are trying to verify that information,” African National Congress spokesman Zizi Kodwa said.

“We are trying to get hold of the family.”

Mpumalanga police spokesman Colonel Leonard Hlathi said he had not heard about the incident, but referred the matter to his colleague, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, who said he was trying to verify the information.

The Citizen reported that Mthembu had been shot at a mall in Witbank on Sunday. A family member confirmed the shooting to the paper.

“We don’t know exactly what happened, but Jackson has indeed been shot, and we are deeply shocked and worried,” the relative was quoted as saying.

“It is not clear how many times he was shot, but he is in hospital as we speak. I think the shooting was politically motivated.”

Mthembu has also been the party's spokesman. - Sapa
