Pretoria - Oscar Pistorius’s family say that they are grateful that he has escaped a murder charge.

The athlete’s uncle Arnold Pistorius read a statement to journalists in the same courtroom where his nephew had just been convicted of culpable homicide.

Pjstorius senior said that even though the family was grateful that Oscar Pistorius escaped a murder charge, they believe that there is no real victor in this case.

“We always knew the facts of the matter, we never had any doubts on Oscar's version,” he told a bevy of photographers and journalists.

He said that in a tragic event involving the death of a young woman, nobody wins.

He acknowledged the Steenkamp family was still “deeply affected” by the traumatic death of Reeva Steenkamp, and said the Pistorius' families hearts still reached out to them in their pain.

He concluded that because mitigating and aggrivating circumstances still had to be argued in Pistorius' sentencing, it would not be appropriate for the family to comment further.
