Pretoria - National Director of Public Prosecutions Mxolisi Nxasana has entered into a deal with President Jacob Zuma that will see him leave office on June 1.

The probe into Nxasana’s fitness to hold office was due to start on Monday - 10 months after Zuma announced it.

At least two sources close to the presidency and the NPA claimed on Monday that the commission has been called off due to a settlement, which was reached in the early hours of Monday morning.

The inquiry follows revelations, after he was appointed by Zuma in 2013, that he had a previous conviction for assault, and had been arrested and tried for murder in 1985.

The commission was also expected to probe whether Nxasana’s statements in the media, where he alleged there was a plot to have him removed from his position, undermined or brought into disrepute the office of the NDPP.

Nxasana on Monday morning refused to comment on the settlement, while presidency spokesman Harold Maloka had not yet responded to questions about the settlement.
