Johannesburg - A Johannesburg metro police officer rescued the victim of an attempted hijacking in a shootout with four men in Soweto on Tuesday night.

“A metro police officer on his way home... came across an attempted hijacking along Impala Road in Protea, Soweto,” said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

Four armed men were trying to hijack the driver of a VW Polo.

“The officer jumped out of his patrol van to assist the victim, but the suspects shot at the officer, who ducked behind the van for cover and returned fire.”

Three of the men fled in a getaway car, which was also a Polo, and one ran into the veld.

No arrests were made.

The victim was not harmed and the gunmen did not succeed in taking his car.

“This was a very brave action and showed the commitment of this officer,” said Minnaar.
