Pretoria - Oscar Pistorius has checked into the Garsfontein Police Station in Pretoria for his first day of community service.

The disgraced former athletics star arrived just before 8am before being briskly escorted into the police station entrance by an unidentified police officer.

Pistorius was dropped off by his sister Aimee Pistorius in her white Volvo before she sped off.

This is the first public sighting of the athlete since he was released into correctional supervision last month.

He was released a day earlier than expected leaving the media unable to get a glimpse of him returning to his uncle's mansion in Waterkloof, where he will serve the remainder of his five-year sentence.

Pistorius did not say anything as he walked into the building, but he looked visibly slimmer than he was during his marathon trial last year.

Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide for the Valentine's Day shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The terms of his correctional supervision were not released. He is awaiting the outcome of the State's appeal, which is seeking a harsher sentence.
