Johannesburg - Hours before Oscar Pistorius shot and killed Reeva Steenkamp, he had a nine-minute phone conversation with his ex-girlfriend, Eyewitness News reported on Thursday.

According to the report, Pistorius's conversation with Jenna Edkins occurred hours before he shot Steenkamp at his Pretoria East home on February 14 last year.

However, the police did not uncover the conversation.

Cellphone service provider data obtained by police investigators showed that Pistorius was on the phone when he arrived at his complex on February 14 around 6pm.

Eyewitness News cross-checked the dialled number on Pistorius's phone against the phone's contact list, with the number saved under "babyshoes".

The number was reportedly used by Edkins but had been registered in her father's name.

According to the report, police did not make the connection and Edkins was never questioned and never gave them a statement.

Edkins reportedly declined to answer questions from Eyewitness News, stating only that it was common knowledge that she and Pistorius had remained friends.

The prosecution declined to comment, it was reported.

Prior to the broadcast of the EWN report, a press statement was issued by the Pistorius family and his legal team on Wednesday night.

"We are not sure of the allegations which are to be made or the source of such allegations, but we are not aware of any deletions having been affected by Oscar or effected on his instructions that could be relevant to this trial or could have impacted on this trial," the statement read.

"As far as we are aware all relevant communications were put before the court...The relevance of the communications from Oscar's phones, iPad and laptop was properly dealt with by the court and ultimately played no role in the matter, this having been found by the court."

Last month Pistorius was acquitted on the charge of murdering his girlfriend Steenkamp.

He said he mistook her for an intruder.

Pistorius was instead found guilty of culpable homicide. Sentencing proceedings will start on October 13.
