Durban - A magistrate who denied bail to two of the three accused in the murder of slain Overport student, Kurtlee Pillay, described his killing as heinous and cruel.

Blaine Raman, 20, and Dinesh Nana, 21, were on Friday denied bail in the Durban Magistrate’s Court. The pair, along with Bilal Tayob, 26, are charged with premeditated murder, kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances of Pillay, 20, on November 4, in Sherwood.

They are alleged to have lured Pillay to his death, stabbing him more than 30 times and driving over him with his own car.

In delivering her decision on bail, magistrate Vanitha Armu described Pillay as having suffered a cruel and horrible death. She pointed out the key points which swayed her decision.

“The security guard and the supervisor at the Belmont Hotel had seen Raman and Nana in the vicinity of the abandoned car. When the police arrived, the two men allegedly fled from the scene,” Armu said.

“There are also fingerprints matching Nana to the deceased’s vehicle and he was found with the car keys in his possession. There is also DNA from the deceased found on his clothing.” she said.

The men were remanded in custody and the matter adjourned to next month.
