Paarl farm raid nets drugs, weapons

Cape Town - Two suspects were arrested for attempted murder, illegal possession of ammunition and the manufacturing of drugs in Mbekweni, Paarl, provincial police reported police on Friday.

“Two suspects, a 36-year-old male suspect and his 34-year-old girlfriend, were arrested and detained at Mbekweni SAPS,” said provincial police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk.

Police followed up on information regarding the manufacturing of drugs at a farm in Roggeland near Mbekweni on Thursday morning.Members of the SAPS Flying Squad and Paarl Crime Intelligence Unit conducting “search warrant operations” entered the suspects’ house where they were allegedly shot at, but the suspect missed, hitting the wall instead.

The suspect then surrendered and police arrested him, confiscating his firearm and 13 rounds of live ammunition.

Police also arrested his girlfriend and both were detained at Mbekweni SAPS.

Following this, SAPS and lab experts from Parow searched the farm and seized items including a “brown Steyr 308 Win Rifle, 140 empty PMP 308 WIN Cartridges, 11 live PMP 308 Rounds, 64 SGB 9X19 MM Rounds, seven empty 9×19 MM rounds, four Trap 12-bore rounds and 96 Carge Rifle Magnum Boxer Primers”.

Chemicals were also confiscated, including eight five litre drums of Isopropanol, one plastic bottle of Aceton, three five litre drums of Glacial Acetic Acid and four 2.5 litre containers of Brown Dichloromethane.

The suspects were due appear in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court on Monday, March 30.
