Johannesburg - Two police officers were attacked, one shot in the upper body, while on duty in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

Spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci said the attack happened on Thursday at around 6.30pm in Ngwekazi Street in Zwide.

“Warrant Officers Ewald Els, 40, and Jakobus Botha, 42, were following up on information about suspects with firearms in public view,” Soci said.

Soci said the police noticed the four men on the street and while searching the men, one drew a firearm and started shooting at them.

“Police retaliated and a shoot-out ensued. Warrant Officer Els was shot in the upper body and has been admitted at the local hospital in a stable condition. Warrant Officer Botha was unharmed in the shooting.”

A case of attempted murder was opened and is under investigation by KwaZakhele Detectives.

A 30-year-old suspect was arrested and a firearm recovered. He is expected to appear in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court soon.

Three men managed to flee on foot and police are following all possible leads and more arrests are imminent, Soci said.
