Durban - Pensioner Robert Ian Gilmore, who is alleged to have driven through an intersection in Amanzimtoti last month, crashing into a car and killing a three-year-old boy, is facing several charges including one of murder and two of attempted murder.

The final charge sheet and statements were handed to Gilmore when he made a brief appearance in the Durban magistrate’s court on Monday.

He will appear in court again next week.

The crash happened at the intersection of Kingsway and Old Main Road at about 6pm on August 15.

Suzette Ratcliffe had her two sons, William, three, and James, two, in the car with her.

It is alleged that Gilmore was intoxicated when he drove through the intersection and crashed into Ratcliffe’s BMW.

William died in hospital soon after and Gilmore has been charged with murder in connection with this.

He has also been charged with the attempted murder of Ratcliffe and James, reckless and negligent driving “for intentionally turning into the face of oncoming traffic” and attempting to leave the scene without ascertaining injuries or damage.

He is facing a further charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Prosecutor Barend Groen told magistrate Anita Govender that the result of the blood sample had not been received, “but it was taken by hand to Pretoria and has been prioritised”. - The Mercury
