Evander - A 62-year-old man appeared in the Evander Magistrate's Court on Monday for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl, Mpumalanga police said.

He would remain in custody until his bail application on July 16, spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said in a statement.

The man is accused of raping the girl in April. She was selling vegetables in Embalenhle, near Secunda, when she went to the man's house, knocked on the door, and was welcomed inside.

He told the girl he was going to fetch money to buy from her, then locked the door and allegedly raped her.

“He then ordered her not to tell anyone or he would kill her,” Mohlala said.

Later that month she met him on the road while selling vegetables. He allegedly took her to his house and raped her again.

“It emerged that the victim's mother noticed a strange discharge from her while she was applying an ointment for treating mosquito bites. She took the victim to the local clinic for medical examination and the rape was confirmed,” he said.
