Police crack KZN robbery syndicate

Durban - Four suspects believed to be part of a robbery syndicate which had been targeting businesses in KwaZulu-Natal appeared in court on Thursday, provincial police said.

The men, aged between 23 and 32, are believed to be responsible for a crime wave in the area in which foreign-owned businesses in the Mbizana area of the province were targeted .

The four suspects, Thembile Jova,33, Mfundiso Mbizeni,29, Xolani Ngoneni, 32, and Sibonelo Mbizeni,25, appeared in the Mbizana magistrate’s court on charges of armed robbery and murder.

The suspects have been linked to a business robbery that happened on February 18 in which the shop owner was murdered. An undisclosed amount of money and cellphones were taken in that incident.

In a separate incident, the men were also linked to a business robbery in March in which two people were attacked. One of the victims was killed in the robbery.

Since the beginning of the year, Mbizana police have arrested seventeen suspects for crimes relating to business robberies and murder in the area. Twenty firearms and three hundred rounds of ammunition were also recovered during those arrests.

The case was postponed to August 4 for further investigation.

Mount Ayliff police cluster commander, Brigadier Mtutuzeli Mtukushe praised the task team responsible for the arrests.
