Johannesburg - Police were forced to tighten the cuffs on two of their own members who were found be part of a gang that attempted to rob a store on the West Rand on Sunday night.

The two police detectives, as well as two other men - a shop employee and a relative of one of the officers - were arrested during a botched robbery at a Jet Mart store in the Krugersdorp CBD on Sunday.

They tied the staffers up with cable ties and held them at gunpoint as they proceeded to rob the retail store. A quick-thinking passerby notified the police and they arrived at the premises soon afterwards, arresting the group before they could lay their hands on the loot. Two firearms that the men used were also seized.

The officers, who were off duty and were dressed in civilian clothes at the time of the robbery, will appear on business robbery charges in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court soon alongside their accomplices.

Provincial police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said departmental steps would also be taken against the officers.

Dlamini urged anyone who had information that could expose police corruption to report it.
