Johannesburg - Police believe they are closing in on a syndicate that has been killing their members.

They have discovered a second car abandoned in a parking lot in the Joburg CBD and believed to be linked to the murders of two police officers in Dobsonville, Soweto.

The Hyundai i20 was found at the Carlton Centre parking lot on Friday, a day after police seized a Hyundai i30 abandoned at the parking lot of China Mall in Langlaagte.

A source, who asked to remain anonymous, said an officer’s gun holster was found in the vehicle seized on Friday while two AK47s, a 9mm pistol and a revolver were discovered in the vehicle confiscated on Thursday.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed that firearms were in the Hyundai found on Thursday. He wasn’t aware that another vehicle had been discovered on Friday.

Mulaudzi said the police were dealing with a syndicate, adding the Hawks were doing everything in their power to break the syndicate and bring its members to book.

“They (syndicate members) don’t give a damn about the police or human beings; they just shoot and move. We must deal with them,” he said.

In July, Warrant Officer Sibusiso Ndlovu was killed and his firearm stolen in Jeppe while responding to a robbery. Five men were later arrested in connection with the shooting.

On September 9, a 10-member gang that had allegedly robbed a store in Bramfischerville shot and killed Warrant Officer Samuel Mchizama, 50, and Constable Solly Ma-luleke, 40, in Dobsonville.

Mulaudzi said one of the recovered firearms had belonged to Ndlovu.
