Durban - Thieves made off with thousands of rand in cash, airtime vouchers and cigarettes after breaking into a convenience store in Brighton Beach on Thursday night.

The thieves, believed to be two men, were able to gain access into the Multisave supermarket in Marine Drive by disabling the alarm system and breaking through the back entrance gate. They targeted the store’s ATM machine and pried it open with a crowbar. It was not yet known how much money was taken.

The incident occurred just after 11pm - three hours after the store had closed.

Kamiel Maharaj, the owner of the store, said this morning that investigators were chasing positive leads. “We know that there were two men, one of whom was Indian, so the police are on their tracks.”

The alarm system had been disabled and the thieves had also tampered with the CCTV cameras.

Maharaj said he was still baffled as to how the men were able to disarm the alarm system and wanted answers from his security company.

“I am very disappointed that this has happened, but I am confident that the police are doing a good job in catching whoever is responsible,” he said.

Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said

Brighton Beach police were investigating a case of business burglary.
