Cape Town - The State has decided to hold off on closing its case in the matter of the so-called “poo protesters” accused of dumping human waste on the steps of the Western Cape legislature.

Andile Lili, Loyiso Nkohla, Thembela Mbanjwa and Songezo Mvandaba are on trial in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court for allegedly contravening sections of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act.

The charges relate to the dumping of human waste, on June 3, 2013, in protest against poor sanitation in Khayelitsha.

Despite not having any more witnesses to call to the stand on Wednesday, prosecutor Leon Snyman said he was not ready to close his case and first wanted rulings on certain evidence that had been provisionally accepted by the court.

Snyman said he was pre-empting that the defence wanted the case to be dropped.
