Cape Town - A former branch manager at the N’wa Mitwa post office in Limpopo was sentenced to six years in jail by the Nkowanowa regional court for stealing more than half a million rand, the Post Office said on Tuesday.

“He was also ordered to forfeit his pension contributions to the SA Post Office,” spokesman Johan Kruger said.

The court found Maile Mokgolane guilty of theft of R570 000, relating to failure to ensure that the fees paid to post office were banked on a daily basis. The sentence was handed down recently.

Kruger said the theft was discovered as part of the monitoring of daily banking procedures by the Post Office’s internal banking section.

“At the time, Mokgolane was internally charged with theft and found guilty. He was dismissed from the services of the SA Post Office on 3 September 2014,” he said.

Post Office CEO Mlu Mathonsi said his arrest was part of a drive to root out crime in the postal system.

“The SA Post Office is intensifying its efforts to rid itself of criminal and fraudulent activities and all security measures are being revised and improved.”
