Polokwane - Police are searching for four awaiting trial prisoners who overpowered two police officers and escaped in a state van in Malamulele, Limpopo.
Spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto said on Wednesday that five prisoners had initially escaped, using the police vehicle, after appearing in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
“One of them handed himself in last night [Tuesday], the official vehicle was found abandoned at least 20km outside of Malamulele. We are still looking for the four others,” said Otto.
The prisoners were about to be transported to police holding cells when they overpowered the two officers.
“We appeal to the public to inform the police whenever they come across any of the men as they are considered dangerous,” Otto said.
