Cape Town - The DA has asked Ipid to investigate the alleged criminal conduct of a detective responsible for investigating the assault of a 52-year-old woman, it said on Monday.

“I have written to the executive director of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate 1/8Ipid 3/8 Robert McBride urging him to launch an investigation into the alleged criminal conduct of the detective tasked with investigating the brutal assault of Delia Adonis,” Democratic Alliance MP Dianne Kohler Barnard said in a statement.

A case was opened against five university students last month after they allegedly assaulted Adonis at a parking lot at Stadium on Main in Claremont, Cape Town, where she worked as a cleaner.

Adonis called for help when she saw the men leave a night-club and assault a man who went after them.

When she later went outside the mall to smoke, the students were waiting for her, and they allegedly kicked her and swore at her.

The Star reported on Monday that a policeman was facing charges of defeating the ends of justice and bribery for allegedly trying to quash the case.

“This is another example of police failing to act as South Africans continue to bear the brunt of violent crime,” Kohler Barnard said.

“The police officers responsible for concealing the evidence in Ms Adonis’s case must be brought to justice.”
