Johannesburg - Police are offering a reward of up to R400 000 for information that could lead to the arrest of a group of people who shot dead two police officers in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Monday.

“The safety and well-being of members of the SAPS is a priority and all necessary measures are being put in place to ensure that our members are protected,” said Colonel Noxolo Kweza in a statement.

Two police officers were shot dead and the third injured by unknown men on the N3 south on Sunday.

One officer died on the scene and a second died later in hospital. A third was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A reward was also offered for those who could give information on the police officer who was shot dead on Tuesday while responding to a robbery at Park Station.

“The national commissioner General Riah Phiyega, as well as the management team of Gauteng in particular, takes this matter very seriously,” Kweza said.

“A comprehensive strategy has been finalised and is being implemented. Amongst the issues the strategy talks to is continual situational awareness of the members, training and utilisation of personal safety gear.”

Nine police officers had been killed in Gauteng since the beginning of the 2014/15 financial year, he said.
