Cape Town - The University of Stellenbosch is reviewing security and is to introduce more safety measures following the weekend rape of a student.
In the fourth incident involving a student this year, the 22-year-old woman was raped on Saturday in a break-in at a Banhoek Road house, one of a number used as accommodation for students.
According to the university, two men were involved and students’ possessions were stolen.
Spokesman Martin Viljoen said the university’s security camera project would be extended to the house.
Campus security would be audited to assess what further measures were required. The university implemented extra measures after the incidence of muggings increased significantly in the first half of the year.
Acting chancellor Eugene Cloete has said R10 million has been spent on security cameras in three years.
The acting rector and vice-chancellor, Professor Leopold van Huyssteen, said the attack on Saturday was “despicable”.
“The university is doing everything possible to support the student and her fellow students who stay in this home.”
More and more was being done to protect staff and students.
On Friday, the senate agreed that from next year, tests would no longer be held at night.
