Durban - The police will not tolerate misconduct or criminality from its members.

“There is no place for such officers within the service and they will be dealt with in terms of police regulations as well as prescripts of the law,” said Captain Thulani Zwane on Wednesday.

He added that the SAPS appreciated people complaining about misconduct.

DA police spokeswoman Dianne Kohler Barnard complained about an incident last week allegedly involving an officer from the eManzimtoti police station.

Christa Joubert, the developer of the Wavecrest Holiday Resort in Illovo Beach, has opened a case against the officer, who has a flat on the property, but does not live there.

She said he twice cut heavy locks on gates leading to the beach, when he had no right to do so. The gates had to stay locked at night for security.

Joubert alleges that on the second occasion, the officer, in civilian clothes, had arrived with dozens of friends and three uniformed policemen.

Commenting on the claims, Zwane said: “It was established that a police officer who lives in the complex invited his colleagues to visit him.

“He became embroiled in an argument with other residents of the complex. According to police at eManzimtoti, a docket was not opened. However, the matter will be investigated once a docket is opened.”

Joubert said she had reported the matter to Durban Central police station as she did not want to report it to eManzimtoti, where the officer in question worked.

The docket has now been transferred from Durban Central to the eManzimtoti station.

Kohler Barnard said she was concerned about “the goings on” at eManzimtoti police station, where, she said, more than 20 senior members had resigned in 18 months.

Zwane denied this.
