Johannesburg - The case of the 24-year-old man arrested in connection with the Rhodes Park double murder and rape was on Tuesday postponed to December 9 to allow for further investigation.

The man, who made a brief appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, is suspected of being part of a gang of 12 that attacked two couples as they strolled inside Rhodes Park in Kensington.

The gang allegedly tied the men up, threw them into the lake and left them to drown. The gang then allegedly raped one of the women. The other woman managed to escape before they could get to her.

On Tuesday, before the case was adjourned, Dumisani Mabunda, the lawyer for the 24-year-old accused, said he was abandoning his client’s bail bid because his address could not be verified.

Earlier in November Johannesburg police arrested a second suspect in Yeoville. Police said the 22-year-old suspect was a Zimbabwe national.

When the double murder and rape trial resumes both suspects are expected to appear.

Both men will remain in custody.

Police are still investigating the matter and are confident they will arrest all the suspects.
