Johannesburg - The trial of a man who allegedly shot dead a motorcyclist during a road rage confrontation was expected to begin on Monday.

Meekahefele Masooa, 43, is accused of shooting Douglas Pearce in February last year on Malibongwe Drive in Johannesburg.

The trial was to take place at the High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court.

Around half the public gallery in the court room was filled with family and friends of Pearce, including several leather-wearing motorcyclists, ahead of the beginning of court proceedings.

During the bail application it was heard that both men carried firearms on the day of the shooting. Mosooa claims he acted in self-defence.

Masooa was out on R5000 bail.

The trial was expected to run from Monday to February 13.
