Durban - A gang of robbers came under fire from cash-in-transit guards who thought they were under attack in Malvern on Monday.

The gang had moments earlier robbed a victim who was on his way to deposit money, said police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker.

He said the victim was approached by five robbers with guns.

Cash-in-transit security guards thought they were under attack and opened fire.

The robbers were said to have made off with R50 000.

They then crashed into another car on the Hans Dettman Highway Bridge near Pinetown.

The robbers then hijacked a motorist to escape.

They left a badly damaged car with bloodstains inside.

It is believed a gun was also found in the car. There were several bullet holes in the car.

Naicker said Malvern police were investigating a case of armed robbery.

No arrests have been made.
