Johannesburg - Two South African National Parks employees were arrested in connection with rhino poaching, the organisation said on Tuesday.

“In a SANParks-driven operation, with support from the SA Police Service, two staff members based in the Kruger National Park (KNP) were arrested on Monday on suspicion of poaching activity during the weekend,” spokesman Reynold Thakhuli said.

The two were not attached to the Ranger Corp units within the park, but were employees of the organisation, Acting CEO Abe Sibiya said.

Sibiya said the strategies employed in the fight against rhino poaching were focused within the park, and not only externally.

“We are constantly on the alert and that is what led to the arrests of these two individuals.”

The use of advanced technology in the park had contributed to the arrests of the men.

“This advanced technology, made possible through funds donated by the public, various corporations and foundations, is assisting in building the much-needed intelligence in the fight against poaching,” said Sibiya.

The two men would appear in the White River Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
