Pretoria - The grade 6 pupil, 14, who allegedly stabbed another pupil to death on Monday has been released into his parents’ custody.

Thabo Tshabalala was stabbed three times in the torso during school hours and died on the scene following an argument with another pupil, given a knife by a fellow pupil.

Thabo’s father, Andries Tshabalala on Wednesday said the investigating officer told them the boy, alleged to have killed his son was released into the custody of his parents.

“We are not sure what is happeningbecause we are busy preparing for my son’s funeral,” he said.

Tshabalala said their home was engulfed by a sombre mood, with his wife Dinah, distraught. She had given birth to baby girl the same day Thabo was killed, and named the newborn Lethabo.

The fatal stabbing comes two months after a similar incident in Soshanguve when a Grade 11 pupil was stabbed to death and another left injured. The stabbing is alleged to have been triggered by a bullying incident and eventual retaliation.

Meanwhile, a pupil, 19, was arrested in Embalenhle near Secunda on Wednesday for allegedly stabbing and killing a classmate, Mpumalanga police said. The two pupils were apparently involved in a physical fight when the suspect ran to his parental home and returned with a knife and stabbed the other pupil. The injured pupil, 19, was rushed to the clinic where he later died.
