Pretoria - The new school term started on a tragic note with a 12-year-old pupil being stabbed to death on Monday after an argument with another learner at Bula Dikgoro Primary School in Mamelodi.
The Grade 6 learner died on the scene.
The Department of Education said in a statement it would set up an independent body to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing. “Counselling and trauma debriefing will be provided by the department’s social support and pastoral care units to the family and learners at the affected school,” said department spokeswoman Phumla Sekhonyane.
Meanwhile, police are investigating a case of murder. Captain Doniah Mothutsane said investigations were under way after the suspect was arrested and kept at a place of safety.
Mothutsane declined to identify the victim. Further details are expected to be released on Tuesday.
