Cape Town - A secret agent testified in a Cape Town court on Monday about an under-cover operation to trap an alleged corrupt police captain.

The Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Bellville heard how the agent secretly watched a meeting in the street between the police officer and his alleged victim.

He pretended to be a tourist taking photographs.

The agent told the court he tried to take photographs as close as possible to the meeting, in order to hear what was being discussed between the captain and the victim.

The agent may not be named for security reasons.

He testified before magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg, at the trial of two former members of the Hawks, Captain Siyaza Patrick Siyale and Wilfred Arno Mentoor.

They have pleaded not guilty to charges of corruption, theft and defeating the ends of justice.

Siyale has also pleaded not guilty to two counts of extortion.

The case revolves around Siyale's alleged victim, Nicodemus Moeng, Cape Town president of the French SA Chamber of Commerce and Industries, who was innocently caught up in a so-called Black Dollar scam.

According to the charge sheet, Congolese businessman David Kilato approached Moeng to become involved in Kilato's investment business.

Kilato claimed to be the only son of an assassinated DRC army general, and told Moeng he feared for his own life and wanted a partner in South Africa to assist in “migrating” his business to South Africa.

Moeng fell for the scam, and lost about R300 000 that Kilato supposedly needed to transfer money to South Africa.

The case continues on July 25.
