Johannesburg - The wait could soon be over for Sam Meyiwa, the father of slain Bafana Bafana star Senzo Meyiwa, after Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Irvin Khoza revealed on Tuesday that the player’s life insurance policy had paid out.

The murderers are yet to be brought to book more than a year since Senzo was shot dead at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus, Ekhurhuleni.

Sam had repeatedly expressed his frustration over the delay of the payment by the Delphisure insurance group. The life insurance policy had been taken out by Senzo’s club, Orlando Pirates.

Reports have suggested that the Meyiwa family were set to receive R5 million, but Khoza would not reveal the figures.

“We have to wait until we have informed the family before we can tell the public, but I can tell you that it is a couple of million. There will be a meeting with Senzo’s family and the club to discuss how the payout is going to be distributed to the beneficiaries. We know it has taken a while but the matter has now been resolved.”

The PSL chairman, who also holds the same position at Pirates, said he was still recovering from the death of Senzo, who was 30 when he was killed.

“He was unique and never had an agent as a footballer. He took me for my word and for me, it was a great loss to lose a player of this calibre. That is why we were concerned about not being able to resolve the issue of the payout,” Khoza said.

On Senzo’s killers, he remarked: “We were briefed by the police about how far they are with the case, which was about six or seven months ago. Until that point, we had not been receiving information apart from what we read in the newspapers.

“We are waiting with bated breath. We are hoping that at some point, the police will come up with a resolution so we can all get closure because we are all still trying to heal.”

Last month, on the anniversary of Senzo’s death, national police spokesman Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale said new information had come to light.

“More than 100 statements have been obtained from possible witnesses,” he said. It is unclear what leads the police have.
