Johannesburg - Four boys and three men accused of gang-raping a mentally impaired 17-year-old are expected back in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The cellphone video which they made of their alleged crime went “viral” on the Internet on April 18, and was one of the main topics trending on Twitter.

The seven, who allegedly matched the descriptions of the attackers shown in the video, were arrested in Dobsonville, Soweto, on April 17.

They face several counts of rape, sexual assault, engaging the sexual services of a minor for reward, using a minor to create child pornography, committing a sexual act in the presence of a minor, and committing a sexual act in the presence of an adult.

The four boys - one aged 13 and three aged 17 - were granted bail in May. The three men, one aged 18 and two aged 19, remained in custody.

During their last appearance in May, the 13-year-old was sent for psychiatric assessment.

The girl went missing on March 21 and was found at a 37-year-old man's house in Braamfischerville, Soweto, during a search launched after police became aware of the video.

However, the charges against the man were provisionally withdrawn by the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on May 4. No reasons were given for the decision. He had been accused of holding her against her will. - Sapa
