Durban - Angered by his fiancée’s disclosure that she had had an abortion, a Pietermaritzburg man killed her at the Liberty Midlands Mall and then jumped off a bridge.

Nkululeko Ngubane pleaded guilty in the city’s high court on Thursday to killing Sindisiwe Charity Mshengu on July 7.

In his plea, he said they both worked at the mall but at different places.

They had been having problems in their relationship, stemming from “her infidelity”. On the day of the murder, he said, they had a bitter argument.

“She told me that the miscarriage I thought she had suffered in 2013 was actually a voluntary abortion. I was hurt and angered and I resolved to cause her pain.”

Mshengu said he bought a knife and they “had a heated exchange of words that culminated in my stabbing the deceased several times”.

“Overcome by the enormity of what I had done, I tried to commit suicide.”

Ngubane admitted that his actions were wrong and unlawful.

Argument on sentencing is to take place on Monday.
