Johannesburg - Six men, including four cash-in-transit company employees, were arrested near Pretoria on Monday for possession of gold worth R23 million, the Hawks said.

“The six-man syndicate was driving in three vehicles from Limpopo on the N1 towards Pretoria,” Captain Paul Ramaloko said.

The Hawks pulled them off the N1 just after they had passed through the Pumulani toll plaza.

Fifty kilograms of gold were found in the vehicles, which included one cash-in-transit company vehicle. Five firearms and the three vehicles were seized.

It was unclear where the men were transporting the gold to.

They would appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Wednesday to face charges of dealing in and smuggling precious metal. - Sapa
