Six nabbed with explosives, guns

Johannesburg - Six men were arrested for the possession of unlicensed firearms and explosives in Mahwelereng, Limpopo police said on Tuesday.

The men, five of whom are South African and the other a foreign national, were arrested on the N11 between Steilloop and Mokopane on Monday night, Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale said.

According to the police's intelligence operation, the men were alleged to have planned to hold up staff at a business and blow up an ATM in the area.

They were allegedly found with ammunition and five firearms, fuses and a blasting cartridge.

They also had other tools such as an electrical extension cord, a 4.5kg hammer, balaclavas, an angle grinder, a screw driver, equipment to force open vehicle doors and 16 vehicle keys.

All the firearms will be sent for ballistics testing.

They were arrested by the police's intelligence team together with Limpopo provincial and Mahwelereng Detective Services, and the local Tactical Response Team.

Investigations would be conducted to determine if the men were involved in other crimes. - Sapa
