Mthatha - Sixteen people have been arrested in Mount Frere for allegedly killing a man and a woman suspected of witchcraft, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

The group, aged between 23 and 71, were arrested on Tuesday afternoon for allegedly killing the 59-year-old man and the 64-year-old woman and setting their homes alight, said Colonel Sibongile Soci.

“The motive for the murders is not known at this stage but allegations of witchcraft and a possible land dispute between the deceased and other community members have been made,” said Soci.

The group face murder and arson charges and would appear in the Mount Frere Magistrate's Court soon.
