Mthatha - The Butterworth Regional Court on Wednesday sentenced a 27-year-old man to six years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 56-year-old woman, Eastern Cape police said.

In the early hours of June 5 last year, Fura Fundisile Zweni entered the woman's house through an open window, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

The woman, who lived in the Ngxakaxha Village in Dutywa was alone at home at the time.

The man then ordered her to remove her underwear, but she refused and fought back.

“She finally managed to escape and reported the sexual assault to her neighbours,” said Manatha.

They arrived at the house to find the man asleep in her bed with his trouser lowered.

The community members reported the incident to police but when officers arrived at the house, the man had disappeared.

He was traced and arrested the next day.
