Johannesburg - A simple traffic violation has resulted in a local soapie actress allegedly becoming the latest victim of police brutality in Joburg.

Rhythm City actress Lele Ledwaba had to be hospitalised with serious injuries following an altercation with a female metro police officer on Monday.

Ledwaba is being treated for a fractured wrist, a broken thumb and severe bruising on her shoulder, said her agent Wesley Mark Gainer.

The actress also broke her phone and car keys during the altercation.

Gainer explained that the actress was travelling home from work on Monday night when she was stopped by the officer for allegedly yielding instead of coming to a halt at a stop sign.

The metro cop ordered Ledwaba to get out of her car, but when she requested the officer’s name and identification details, she allegedly got aggressive and assaulted the actress.

“The officer told Lele that celebrities always think they can get away with everything,” he said.

He said the actress managed to get the officer’s vehicle registration number and has opened a case against her at the Midrand police station.

Ledwaba was unavailable for comment on Wednesday morning.

Metro spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said he could not comment on the incident immediately as he was still verifying details.
