Kimberley - A 19-year-old man was arrested by the police after he allegedly killed his 46-year-old father in Roodepan on Wednesday.

It is alleged that the suspect stabbed the deceased with a knife and assaulted him with the handle of a pick.

Police spokesman Donald Mdhluli said the incident apparently happened after the two men were involved in an argument.

“Police and medical personnel responded to the incident and the man was declared dead on the scene,” Mdhluli said.

He added that the suspect was yet to be charged with murder and would appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Shocked community members watched in horror as the attack unfolded in Sand Shark Street around lunchtime on Wednesday.

According to community members, the 19-year-old is apparently a relapsed drug user.

“He had an argument with his parents earlier in the morning and it seems as if he took out his anger on his father by beating him with the handle of a pick and then stabbing him with a Okapi knife,” one resident said.

“We heard screams and when I ran into the road, I saw the father lying in the road,” another resident added.

Police on Wednesday confiscated the handle of the pick, which was covered in blood, as well as the knife.

The emotional mother of the teenager was led away by the police, although it could not be established where she was taken.

Shocked community members on Wednesday vowed to take action against crime.

“There were three of us (women) who wanted to assist when we heard the commotion in the road, but because we are women, we could not do much. The boys, who should have helped, stood around and did nothing. Where we stay in Galeshewe we blow a whistle to alert community members when a crime is being committed and everyone assists and takes action against the perpetrator – even before the police arrive,” one onlooker said.
