Johannesburg -

A 22-year-old man appeared in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for allegedly stabbing his mother to death, Eastern Cape police said.

Captain Jackson Manatha said Thembela Banguse was not asked to plead and his case was postponed to February 12 for further investigation.

He was remanded in custody, said Manatha.

Banguse was arrested on Monday in Kei Bridge, near Butterworth.

Manatha said it was alleged that he was fighting with his niece at Komkhulu Location Dyosini Village near Kei Bridge, Butterworth.

“The bone of contention is yet to be established. It is alleged that Mrs Nofenitshala Banguse, aged 67, who is the biological mother of the 22-year-old suspect intervened verbally,” said Manatha.

“It was at that stage that the suspect stopped assaulting his niece and began to accost his own mother with a bush knife. The mother was injured on her upper body and died instantly at the scene.”

Police were alerted and arrested Banguse for murder and recovered the bush knife. - Sapa
