Durban - Five armed robbers stormed eManzimtoti’s Clear Waters Spur at 7.45am on Monday, assaulting two managers before making off with cash, car keys and other valuables.

Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said the men locked staff in an office.

Staff referred enquiries to Spur spokesman Bev Conwell who did not answer calls.

One worker, who declined to give his name, said he was at the back of the restaurant when the robbery took place.

“When they entered, they hit the manager and his wife on their heads with a gun and the staff who were there were told to lie down,” he said. The robbers also had a panga.

They fled in a blue VW Polo.

Zwane said a case of business robbery was opened.

“We will increase our visibility in business places and malls. We appeal to business owners to assist us by strengthening their security,” he said.

Naeem Rahiman, KZN branch manager at Businesses Against Crime, said business owners needed to place their security on high alert as the festive season approached.

“This is when more and more robberies happen. Foot traffic at shopping centres and restaurants increase,” he said.

Rahiman said business should avoid keeping large sums on site and use CCTV systems.

“Also work with police and liaise with them regularly,” he said. Rahiman said that recently there had been several petrol station robberies.

Meanwhile, eManzimtoti police are still investigating the murder of an 18-year-old Winklespruit woman on Friday. No arrests have been made.

The teenager’s body was found in dunes on the beach. She had sustained three stab wounds.
