Johannesburg - The department of correctional services would investigate allegations that murderer Don Steenkamp had flouted rules in the Kimberley prison, it said on Saturday.

“Should there be a serious allegation that's made against him, we will investigate and act accordingly,” said Free State and NorthCape Regional Deputy Commissioner Grace Molatedi.

Steenkamp is serving a 20 year prison sentence after he was found guilty of murdering his parents, Deon and Christel, and sister, Marthella. He also raped his sister.

The Beeld reported on Saturday, that Steenkamp, 18, had made more phone calls than he was permitted to and that he had taken takeaway food to his cell.

“We can't confirm whether the allegations are true or not,” said Molatedi.

She said the register indicated that Steenkamp had made four out-going phone calls, the amount that is allowed.

“As for the others we are not aware, it's not documented.”

According to Beeld, insiders allege that Steenkamp had phoned family members twice during weekdays.

Prisoners were only permitted to make phone calls on weekends.

Steenkamp reportedly called one of his supporters every second day.

It is also alleged that Steenkamp took bags full of food to his cell, with the help of a prison warden, after a family day in October.

Molatedi said take-away food was not allowed in prison.

She had asked the head of the centre to investigate the allegations, she said.
