Johannesburg - A 3-month-old baby who was kidnapped on Monday has been reunited with his family.

Lieutenant-Colonel Khensani Magoai said: “I can confirm that the baby has been found.”

However, the suspect had not been arrested, he said.

Magoai said the police had taken statements from witnesses who helped reunite Thabang Maponya with his family.

The suspect had apparently befriended his mother while she was pregnant with him.

On Monday, the woman, known as Agnes, offered to take them out for a treat. However, she disappeared with the baby after saying she was going to buy food at a takeaway outlet in Joburg.

The baby was returned to his family in Meadowlands, Soweto, unharmed.

Thabang’s mother, Boitumelo Maponya, was overjoyed to see her son after three days of agonising about his safety and whereabouts.

His grandmother, Maria, said she was happy to be able to spend Christmas with her grandson.

The child’s aunt, Mathapelo Mohapi, said she hoped the police found the suspect.

“The case is still under investigation,” said Magoai.
