Johannesburg - Two of three men who tried to rob a supermarket in Primrose, on the East Rand, on Tuesday were injured while trying flee, Gauteng police said.

When police arrived at the scene the three ran up the stairs in the shop to the back door, said Sergeant Styles Maome.

“They jumped from 6m to Silvia Street where police officers were already waiting,” said Maome.

Two of them were taken to hospital under police guard, and the other to the Primrose police station.

The three allegedly entered the shop and threatened the owner and two employees with guns.

“While the suspects were inside the shop, a bakery delivery vehicle came to deliver bread. They saw unusual faces through the window of the shop and alerted a patrolling police vehicle that was nearby,” said Maome.

Police found a 9mm Norinco firearm, a toy gun, a bag with cable ties, the shop owner's cellphone and shop keys in the alleged robbers' possession.

The three were charged with business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. They were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court soon.
