Kathu - Police are looking for a 26-year-old male who escaped from the Kathu Police Station by breaking the bars in his holding cell.

Northern Cape police on Wednesay confirmed that Irsak Schalk was arrested in Kathu on Monday on a charge of theft and that he was in a holding cell at the Kathu Police Station when the incident occurred.

He was due to appear in court on theft charges. However, Schalk managed to break through the bars of the cell and escape.

Police are now also investigating a case of escaping from lawful custody.

According to sources in Kathu, a local family apparently fed and transported Schalk to another house without knowing that he was a wanted man.

They said that he had been wearing a pair of blue shorts and sandals when he was last seen and is believed to be on his way to Limpopo.

Police spokeswoman Major Dimakatso Mooi has requested anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts to contact Warrant Officer Cillier or the Kathu Police Station on 053 723 9106 or 053 723 9135.
