Klerksdorp - North West police killed one suspect and arrested another following an armed robbery of a tuck shop near Orkney.

North West police spokesperson Colonel Sabta Mokgwabone said on Friday that four suspects had allegedly robbed a tuck-shop in Kanana near Orkney on Wednesday.

“Four suspects entered the tuck shop in the morning and robbed the owner of an undisclosed amount of cash and airtime vouchers before driving away with an Opel Astra sedan,” Mokgwabone said. “The shop owner allegedly chased the suspects with his car while police were called. The suspects collided with a pole in Jouberton whereupon two suspects ran away in different directions while the other two remained in the car.

“It is alleged that one of the suspects, aged 31, shot at the police who returned fire and he was fatally wounded,” Mokgwabone added. “One of suspects who remained in the car was arrested while the other two suspects are still at large.”

A 29-year-old armed robbery suspect was due to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates Court on Friday. Police managed to seize a revolver with a filed-off serial number. An investigation into the matter continues and an inquest has been opened.
