Johannesburg - An alleged robber was killed in a shoot-out with police in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg, on Tuesday, said police.

He and another man were alleged to have robbed a spaza shop, said Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela.

“They fled with cash, cigarettes, airtime and the shop owner's cellphone,” said Mavimbela.

Police gave chase and one of the men took out a gun and began firing.

“An officer reacted quicker and... shot the suspect on the upper body. The suspect went on to collapse in an open veld,” said Mavimbela.

He man died on the scene.

The other suspect ran into the informal settlement but was apprehended.

All the stolen items, including the gun and ammunition, were recovered.

“The remaining suspect will be charged with business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Mavimbela.

The man was expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court soon.
