Umlazi - A suspect believed to be linked to several murder and robbery cases, including the shooting dead of a security guard and two police officers during a cash-in-transit heist, has been arrested, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Umlazi Crime Intelligence, Umlazi police and the Brighton Beach Task Team conducted an intelligence driven operation searching for a notorious wanted criminal,” police spokesman Jay Naicker said.

“Police proceeded to D Section, Umlazi where they found a 30-year-old male who was in possession of a pistol with two magazines and 26 live rounds of ammunition,” Naicker said. Police then proceeded to the suspect's residence in Harding where they seized a revolver.

The man is expected to appear in the Umlazi Magistrate's court soon on weapons charges, while police do ballistic tests on the two firearms to check if they were used in any crimes.

“According to detectives, the arrested suspect is believed to be involved in numerous murder and robberies cases,” Naicker said.

“It is also believed that he is linked to a case in Harding where a group of heavily armed men accosted cash-in transit security guards at a cash and carry store and robbed them of an undisclosed sum of cash.” During the robbery, the suspects killed a security guard, and while fleeing they shot and killed two police officers from Harding.

The vehicle the officers were travelling in caught alight. A third officer who was also inside was rescued from the burning vehicle by members of the community.
