Johannesburg - The Benoni police cluster commander accused of fraud should be suspended with immediate effect, the SA Police Union said on Tuesday.

“Her arrest and appearance in a Soweto court yesterday is an embarrassment that the SAPS can ill afford,” general secretary Oscar Skommere said in a statement.

“The fact that she appeared in court means there is prima facie evidence against her.”

Vuyokazi Ndebele was released on bail of R2000 on Monday and was expected back in court on August 18.

She was arrested at her home on Sunday night in connection with an ongoing investigation into corruption in the SA Police Service (SAPS) recruitment process.

Skommere said Ndebele's suspension would allow for a credible investigation.

“The SAPS must be seen to be acting against misconduct even amongst senior commanders.”
