East London - Two police officers appeared in the East London Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for corruption, the Hawks said.

Constable Christopher Adams, 37, and Constable Brently Naidoo, 28, were released on a warning and would appear in court again on October 27, said Captain Paul Ramaloko.

“It was established that during their court appearance they were on suspension for a similar matter,” said Ramaloko.

The Buffalo City Municipality officers handed themselves over to the Hawks in East London on Monday afternoon after warrants of arrest were secured against them.

In March, the pair allegedly took a R250 bribe from a man who was found in possession of a packet of dagga at an entertainment area in East London.

“The complainant was transported in the officer's patrol van, which was heading for a nearby station, when the officials demanded the bribe and promised to release the complainant,” said Ramaloko.

“The complainant was returned to the entertainment area after he had paid the bribe.”

It was unknown where the officials took the dagga.
