Johannesburg - A taxi driver has been shot dead outside his house in Soweto, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

Major Mack Mngomezulu said the man was gunned down on Tuesday morning in Chiawela, as he was on his way to a meeting.

Mngomezulu said a white minibus taxi was apparently seen leaving the scene after the shooting.

“We suspect this incident is linked to taxi violence,” he said.

It was unknown how many people were involved in the killing and no arrests had been made, Mngomezulu said.

The Soweto driver was shot the same day a woman was shot and killed and two men were injured at a taxi rank in Tembisa.

The three were caught in the crossfire during a shoot-out between two taxi associations over routes, police said.

“A lady was shot in the stomach and two men were shot in the arm,” spokesperson Warrant Officer Mahlodi Langa said at the time.

Langa said the commuters were waiting in a queue to get into a taxi when they were shot.
